CPD: Granulocytes and Monocytes – Essential Blood Cell Morphology

Dr Ali Mahdi · May 29, 2023

Welcome to this online course on granulocyte and monocyte morphology. This course is part of the Essential Blood Cell Morphology series.

By the end of this course, you will have a comprehensive understanding of the subject and the knowledge and skills required to practice in this field confidently.

Course details

The course will cover the following topics in detail:

  1. Introduction and basic concepts: This section provides a comprehensive overview of the course, introducing you to the fundamental principles and concepts related to granulocyte and monocyte morphology, laying the groundwork for understanding subsequent sections in the course. We will cover topics such as haematopoeisis, cell function and clinical approached to issues including neutrophilic, eosinophilia and monocytosis.
  2. Normal granulocyte morphology: This section delves into the intricate details of the normal morphology of granulocytes, covering their cellular structure, intermediary subtypes, and characteristic features, enabling students to recognise and interpret variations from normalcy in subsequent sections.
  3. Normal monocyte morphology: Focusing on the normal morphology of monocytes, this section elucidates their key structural components and distinctive characteristics, equipping you with the knowledge required to identify and analyze deviations from the norm later in the course.
  4. Changes to the granulocyte nucleus and cytoplasm: Expanding on alterations in granulocyte nucleus and cytoplasm, this section explores the various morphological changes encountered in pathological conditions, facilitating the understanding and interpretation of abnormalities in granulocytes.
  5. Changes to monocyte morphology: Here, we will cover the  morphological variations encountered in pathological contexts, also focussing on distinguishing reactive lymphocytes from mature monocytes.
  6. Reactive conditions and chronic myeloid malignancies: We will look at how to provide an in-depth analysis of the morphological changes observed in conditions such as leukaemoid reactions, chronic myeloid leukaemia and chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia. We will also emphasise their clinical significance.
  7. Basophilia and Eosinophilia: This section explores the underlying causes, associated morphological characteristics, and clinical features of these conditions.

We will use video tutorials with English captions and an end-of-course assessment that awards a certificate upon successful completion.

It is estimated this course will take you 1-2 hours to complete.

The target audience for this course are:

  • Biomedical scientists/medical laboratory scientists
  • Haematology trainees and consultants
  • Haematopathology trainees and specialists

Your course certificate will be available for download after successfully completing the course assessment. If you have difficulty downloading your certificate, please email admin@blood-academy.com for further assistance.
